Hang it on the wall and call it Art.

A few years ago I was had a decent size exhibit of illustrations and photographs in Savannah. It was late at night and I was walking the cobble stone streets along the river with the  Curator discussing our opening night.  We were having a pleasant night until her cell phone rang.  It was another artist. She did one of those Tasmanian Devil dances, then very loudly said into the phone. “Hang it on the wall and call it it art!”

Well I liked the phrase and borrowed it for a series of conceptual photographs for an Advertising client. You may have seen them. There the advertisements with the …. no I will wait until I post them online before saying more.

Now in all fairness to this wonderful woman, I should point out she was talking to a man named Art, who  could not decide what painting to exhibit.  What she meant to say was “Hang it on the wall and YOU call it, Art”.  meaning it is your call Art. Still I like the visual of her misspeak and kept it.
