Auto FX Project

What the studio photographs do not show - is how each design was made in such a way that natural vegetation will over grow certain parts completing the experience. As the seasons change and as the years pass - the visual presence of each sculpture will change.

Notice the shadow under the box shaped sculpture base. The base appears to float, thanks to a cement pyramid in the center of the base.

For the final and permanent installation the cement is tinted black and the cement pyramids are built on site, the base is placed 1 meter deep in the ground. This acts both as an anchor and support.

Next the top of each pyramid is cut to a flat surfaced then buffed and polished to a super smooth surface. A hole is drilled in the center to support a six inch stainless rod that has been welded to sculpture base. Finally nine half round holes and polished to fit a single industrial ball bearing in each hole. One the sculpture is in place, the ball bearings allow for exact positioning. Once in place resin is poured over the ball bearings to keep them in place.

Brief synopsis: The four sculptures shown are all part of a commissioned work project. The project began in 1998 and was completed in 2004. However due to the size of final piece and the needed landscaping involved to properly display this piece the final installation was not completed until 2006. A total of five metal sculptures were made. The fifth is not shown here.

Designing and building: Before building, a 1/20 miniature was made to test design , balance and overall structural integrity as each would be required to stand alone outdoors year round and be subjected to extremes in weather.

CNC was used to create the cutting templates. Plasma cutters and various sheet metal saws and sanders were used to cut each and prepare each section for assembly. Due to size and weight each sculpture was assembled on location.

All work from design to finish was preformed solely by Bob Orsillo. Studio photography by Bob Orsillo Location photography by Angela Raven and Rubin Estes.
